Guide to the Railways of Vietnam

Vietnam Railways is the state-owned operator of the railway system in Vietnam. The main route is the 1,727 kilometre single-track North–South Railway line, running between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The journey along the east coast takes 29-34-hours. The line was built in the 1880s during the French colonial rule. Trains travelling this line are sometimes referred to as the Reunification Express, although no particular train carries this name officially. There are also standard gauge lines running from Hanoi to the People’s Republic of China, and to Beijing, and some mixed gauge in and around Hanoi. – Wikki

MY TRIP TO VIETNAM

I will be flying to Vietnam in March for ten days. I will fly to Ho Chi Minh on 7th March and fly back on 16th March. For the moment I am using this page to help me plan my trip. On my return I will add my own photos and write my own experiences. I’ve already booked my train trips as follows:

  1. SE2 Saigon to Hanoi (2 nights on the sleeper train)
  2. SE1 Violette Train from Hanoi to Da Nang (1 night)
  3. The Vietage train from Da Nang to Dieu Tri (sponsored by Anantara hotels)

This first trip is more of a look see. I will be back again to do the branch lines.

ALL ABOUT THE SLEEPER TRAINS

On Vietnam Railways, 1st Class Sleepers or VIP Sleepers are ‘soft’ beds with four berths per cabin. 2nd Class Sleepers are hard beds with six berths per cabin. There are also sometimes a small number of 2-berth VIP cabins.
