Indonesia Embraces High-Speed Travel
After much anticipation, the time has finally come to experience Indonesia’s high-speed rail revolution firsthand. With Jakarta as our starting point, we’ll embark on the inaugural ride of the ‘Whoosh’ high-speed train, traveling at a thrilling 350 km/h to the city of Bandung. This journey marks a watershed moment for Indonesia, the world’s fourth most populous country with over 275 million citizens spread across its 17,000 islands.
Reaching the Departure Point
Our adventure begins with a short journey outside central Jakarta to the Halim station, located in the city’s eastern suburbs. We’ll utilize Jakarta’s modern LRT (Light Rail Transit) system, specifically the Bekasi Line, to reach Halim station. This fully automated, driverless line showcases the city’s investment in cutting-edge transportation.
Halim station itself reflects China’s major role in this project, with design and construction influences evident throughout the modern facility. Even during the pre-launch ‘free trial’ stage, the station offers a glimpse into Indonesia’s rich railway heritage and provides travelers with essential amenities.
Boarding Indonesia’s High-Speed Wonder
Security is efficient, ensuring a smooth start to our journey. Once through, the departure area provides basic facilities and even a shop for ‘Whoosh’ merchandise. The popularity of this new service is clear, with crowds eager to experience the future of Indonesian travel.
Thanks to some inside help, we’ve secured tickets for this historic ride, getting our first look at the KCIC CR400AF train. A rebranded Chinese Fuxing CR400AF, this sleek machine boasts a design speed of 400 km/h, potentially making it one of the world’s fastest operational trains.
From VIP Luxury to Affordable Comfort
The train features various classes, from a luxurious 9-seat VIP section to more spacious Business and Premium Economy options. All seats cleverly reverse to maintain a forward-facing orientation. VIP and First Class pamper passengers with supple leather seating, ample legroom, and adjustable footrests.
A Swift Journey to Bandung
The 142 km journey from Jakarta Halim to Bandung Tegalluar is a marvel of efficiency, taking only 46 minutes. This drastically cuts travel time compared to the previous 2+ hour route. Ticket prices are surprisingly affordable, especially for Premium Economy, making this high-speed experience accessible.
The Future of Indonesian Travel
The Indonesian government has ambitious plans to extend this high-speed network to Surabaya, revolutionizing travel across Java. This could create a compelling alternative to air travel, offering greater environmental sustainability and economic benefits.
Indonesia’s first high-speed railway is a true engineering feat that promises to change travel within the region. Its success holds the potential for even more ambitious rail projects throughout Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
